Embarking on the exclusive pumping journey, whether it's a conscious choice or a circumstance, is no walk in the park. It's a relentless cycle of pumping, washing, and feeding that can leave you feeling drained. As a two-time exclusive pumping mom, I've been through the trenches and back, and I'm here to share the tried-and-tested tips and hacks that made my exclusive pumping journey not only manageable but worthwhile.

Here are 10 tips to make exclusive pumping easier:

1. Invest in Quality Equipment

  • Opt for a high-quality, closed system, double electric pump (Medela brands are highly recommended).

  • Consider a hands-free pump, like the Medela Freestyle, to multitask effectively. This will also helpyou feel less "strapped" to your pump

  • Use a pumping bra for convenience, allowing you to tackle other tasks or feed your baby simultaneously, saving you valuable time.

  • Pro Tip: If possible, try renting a hospital grade pump from your hosptal.

2. Set a Realistic Pumping Schedule

  • Burnout is real, so create a schedule that suits your lifestyle.

  • Pumping at the same time your baby eats is ideal but might be challenging; find what works best for you.

  • Aim for 120 minutes of pumping per day, split into 6-8 sessions, pumping every 2-3 hours for 15-20 minutes each.

  • Find your rhythm—my strategy was pumping every 4 hours for 20 minutes, providing longer breaks between sessions and more time between pumps in the MOTN (Middle of the Night)

3. Stock Up on Pumping Parts

  • Invest in multiple sets of pumping parts to save time on cleaning.

  • Having several sets allows you to rotate through them, minimizing the need for frequent washing.

  • This is especially helpful for the MOTN as you won't have direct access to your kitchen to do washing

4. Create Efficient Pumping Stations

  • Designate comfortable and personalized pumping spaces in areas where you spend the most time.

  • Stock your station with essentials to avoid constant back-and-forth trips.

  • Pro Tip: Invest in a small mini fridge like this one to keep at your nightstand. This will avoid having to run to the kitchen in the MOTN to keep milk warm.

  • Pro Tip: Use a pumping cart like this one to organize everything you need for your pumping station (s)

5. Build a Strong Support System

  • Reach out to positive-minded family and friends for encouragement.

  • Enlist your partner or a trusted support person to assist with washing parts—this can make a significant difference.

6. Maximize Pumping Time

  • Create a calm and comfortable environment during pumping sessions.

  • Utilize this time for yourself—read, catch up on shows, and embrace moments of relaxation.

  • Batch prepare bottles for the day to streamline the feeding process.

7. Freeze Milk in Small Portions

  • Avoid wasting precious breast milk by freezing it in small portions.

  • This allows you to thaw exactly what your baby needs, minimizing any leftovers.

8. Skip Warming Bottles

  • Save time, especially during nighttime feedings, by serving breast milk cold or at room temperature.

  • According to the CDC, it's perfectly safe, and your baby might not mind!

  • I learned this my second time around and it saved me a ton of time

9. Be Kind to Yourself

  • Exclusive pumping is challenging, so grant yourself grace.

  • You're making a courageous decision for yourself and your baby.

  • Utilize resources like lactation consultants and healthcare professionals for guidance.

10. Batch Prepare Bottles Ahead of Time

  • Pro Tip: If you have have babies like mine, having a bottle on hand and ready to go as soon as they open those eyes is KEY

This sh*t is hard, so be sure to give yourself grace. Feel confident that you are making the best choice for you and your baby. Choosing this path is the most courageous decision. Use all the resources available to you to help guide you including lactation consultants and your healthcare professionals.

Disclaimer: Please note that the guidance above is based on my own personal journey based on exclusively pumping two of my children. It should not be considered medical advice. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new feeding regimens  for your baby.
